The Baffler

The Baffler

Travels the countryside laying sound-proof, foam squares to protect the populace from unwanted, underground noise.

You can't fear what you can't hear!

The Baffler held the coveted title of Current Champ from Sunday, November 11, 2007 to Monday, November 12, 2007, heartily vanquishing The Underminer to earn it. Unfortunately, brutal defeat came soon after, at the merciless hands of The Foley Brothers.

This hero's magnaminous likeness was captured at the moment of glorious triumph by Guest Illustrator Wally Torta.

Audience

Quotes overheard while standing in the crowd that gathered to watch the carnage…

  1. Hahaha beautiful!! Another Superest success.

  2. Fix your freaking RSS feed. Meh. Whatever, this comic only has 2 or 3 funny posts—unsubscribed.

  3. oh no everyone! Mr. Big has bailed on our site. I think I will miss his inability to use his real email on his post the most.

  4. Well, I was going to comment about the broken RSS feed, too, though I was just going to email it to the site maintainers rather than be a big public ass about it. So far it's just been a minor inconvenience, but I can see it getting really annoying when there's like a hundred entries.

Incidentally, the problem is just that the permalink for all the entries gets changed to the current entry, and as a result they all get marked as "new" every time there's an update, so many feed readers (such as Google Reader) end up reposting all the descriptions every time a new entry goes up (but they all link to the most recent one).

Fixing it should be pretty simple.

  5. I know, Fluffy. We're actually working on it. I was just jabbing back at Biggie. I can understand how it can get a little irritating. Sorry! :)

  6. "CURSES!"

I like the Baffler's hat. Very stylish.

  7. Fluffy - Thanks for the insight into the problem, Fluffy. As it is, we're publishing the feed with MT's default feed template. What's curious, is that Google Reader appears to be interpreting the feed in a different way than NetNewsWire or Firefox's LiveBookmarks.

I'm looking into the problem now, and hopefully we'll have the feed problem resolved before the next hero. My apologies.

  8. Weird. MT 4.0, or 3.x? I'm still running 3.x and haven't had any problems like that, but I've heard that 4.0 has some weird brokenness in its default feed templates. I guess this could be one of them?

  9. Fluffy? From songfight? It's a small world wide web after all.

Great job on the sound proofer, Wally!

  10. Good News about the Feeds!

They should be working properly in Google Reader (and other feed readers) now. What's more, they now include the Hero's picture, as well as the Additional Notes. There's barely any reason to even come to the site anymore!
    I don't know why I'm even here!
    (apologies again for the disruption).

  11. The feed is still reposing the last 15 entries (although now with super-spiffy graphic as well as description!) on LiveJournal. I dunno how that compares to Google Reader, etc.
But that will certainly not dissuade me from reading on! I'm loving this contest. Who can stop the Baffler? Dear lord, WHO!?!

    codex | [ a ]
  12. That may be because I've been f-ing with the feed for the past two hours. Hopefully it will stop doing that. If not, please let me know.

    Bearskinrug | [ a ]
  13. Thank you for putting the content into the feed. I wish more sites would follow the lead on that. Sure, I will probably visit the site less now, but at least I won't remove it from my reader and forget about it after 2 weeks :) And I'll still stop in for comments from time to time.

    John Laur | [ a ]
  14. Your welcome, John. It really is one of those situations where it might hurt us, but the responsible thing to do is give readers the option to see the art here or not. Hope to see you back!

  15. I definitely prefer having the content in the feed. I subscribe to so many things that I tend to miss things which are just a title and one-line summary. Also in the case of The Superest I tend to go to the item anyway so I can remember who was vanquished.

If you want to be absolutely sure people know about comments you could always put a "# comments" link in the feed.
